The SMART HOSPITAL-WWT project aims to design, develop, and validate an intelligent system for the on-site monitoring and treatment of hospital effluents contaminated with hazardous substances. This initiative proposes an innovative technological solution that will allow for the safe, on-site analysis and elimination of high-concern contaminants before they are discharged into the sewer system. The system integrates advanced biosensors, genetic analysis techniques, and an intelligent digital platform to detect and monitor cytostatic drugs, antibiotics, resistant bacteria, and resistance genes (resistome) present in the urine samples of hospital patients.

This will ensure the complete elimination of contaminants that cannot be treated with conventional purification, through on-site treatment within the hospital. This allows for the pre-purification of effluents before their discharge into the sewer system, contributing to environmental protection and improved healthcare safety.

In this exciting research project, SENSOTEC is leading the way in providing the physicochemical and safety measurement elements for the complete digitalization and automation of the process.

On the one hand, it has designed and installed the specific sensors for regulating and evaluating the process (reaction temperature, pH, ORP, and conductivity), generating data for analysis and the information necessary for real-time process regulation.

On the other hand, to evaluate the system’s performance under real-world conditions, Sensotec has implemented monitoring of both the external environment and the interior of the treatment module. This allows us to subsequently assess the interaction between the system and its environment, as well as validate the data obtained.

Finally, Sensotec has also taken responsibility for the safety of personnel by detecting gases, leaks, and the effectiveness of the room’s ventilation and air conditioning.
